I always felt some of Kirby's best work was on war stories. They were very personal, and that comes through in the expressions on the soldiers faces, such as in panel 6. You can see Kirby's handwritten lettering in some of the baloons, probably meaning that he worked the same way then as he did in the 1970s - directly writing his script on the boards for the letterer to copy.
