What's up with that?

These must have been some heavy boards back in the day. Someone used the back of it for a painting pallet and it didn't soak through?

Ben Oda

While I don't think Ben Oda's lettering ever reached the towering heights of excellence achieved by his predecessor, Howard Ferguson, there's no doubt that he established and perfected the classic romance-comic lettering style (as displayed quite beautifully on this particular splash page) -- which surely must have contributed, somewhat, to the success of the S&K love comics.

Inking

Quite possible that Mort Meskin had a hand in inking this.

I agree with you Johnny S.--that's some beautiful lettering.

Incredible page! Interesting

Incredible page! Interesting that Jack slightly modified the woman's expression. Raised her left eyebrow, and softened her chin.
I sent the back side pallet to Steven Brower who did a Kirby colour pallet feature for the Kirby Museum, and Steven sent me back an e-mail with a side by side of Kirby's known pallet, and the back side of the page pallet shown here.
They were an exact match. Odd thing is it looks like tempera or gouache on the back of the page, and Kirby used ink dye most of the time as I understand it.
I personally don't see any Meskin on this page. There is often evidence of Kirby's hand on S&K pages inked by Meskin though. In addition to inking complete stories during this period (usually the lead feature in an issue), KIrby often punched-up pages inked by Meskin and others, spotting blacks most often.

Kirby Color Palette

As Pat said, the colors certainly match Jack's color palette that appear over and over again in his work. And I don't see any Meskin here either, looks like pure Kirby to me.

Wonderful page.
