At the end of this month, on the 28th is Jack Kirby's 97th birthday and the date for the Kirby Heroes 4 Heroes initiative. Kirby's granddaughter, Jillian Kirby, created the initiative to help comic book creators in need.
The Hero Initiative (http://www.heroinitiative.org) is a nonprofit organization started in 2000 to create a financial safety net for comic creators, much in the same fashion that exists in almost any other trade from plumbing to pottery.
The Kirby4Heroes began in 2012 raising $5,000 for The Hero Initiative. In 2013 the initiative raised $10,000 and increased by another $5,000 in 2013 and again in 2014, reaching $15,000. This year, Jillian Kirby's has a $20,000 campaign goal. Watch Jillian's video here. Many artists also participate in Wake Up and Draw, in which they create illustrations in tribute to Kirby and then auction them later on eBay, with the money going to the nonprofit.
